Recorded in February 2016, this archival piece was produced with the sole intention of outstaying its welcome. If we are to look to its 33 minute duration and why it was never released, it becomes obvious that it succeeded in achieving its purpose.
In deciding not to release the work I managed to lose the file on one of my various hard drives or SD cards, I knew the title of the file: "Amidst" (a cursory title, stemming from the idea of being caught within the piece), but for whatever reason could not source it on any of my available HDDs. I resigned to not ever finding it, simply considering it to be a lost cause of overbearing, inconsistent passages of raw sound, weighed down by its cumbersome length and its lacking of a clear direction other than the reason for its genesis.
While I still consider this to be somewhat true, upon its rediscovery and reacquaintance I've come to understand that the conditions for its success were never based within the grounds of it existing as a coherent movement of sound. My distaste for it came from the aesthetic of the piece at the moment of recording, disregarding its flow as directionless vignettes of noise. However, its elusiveness transformed it into an object of desire, a wish to be able to test myself against the work again, to understand it for what it is. So upon revisiting the file I felt a release was due, I owe it that much.
